Skotlander Rum aging in WWII bunker

An award-winning boutique brand produced in Denmark, Skotlander Rum will age some of its distillate in bunkers built during World War II.

Skotlander Rum - Cask Aged RumBut why? Isn’t the best location for aging rum the tropics? Anders Skotlander, owner of Skotlander Rum explains: “The cold climate in Denmark offers us something different. Previously we have tried aging rum at sea on an old schooner — the movement of the sea and the difference between summer and winter gave us a really interesting rum. Now let’s try the complete opposite — this rum is being kept still and the temperature in the bunker is 10˚c night and day, all year round. I think we’ll spend much longer ripening the rum, maybe twice as long as the tropics, but in turn, the taste may be much more refined.

This limited edition Skotlander Rum begins with a slow four-week fermentation in the cold Nordic climate to develop complex flavor components. The distillation in pot stills ensures the majority of these flavor compounds remain.

The Bunkers

The old bunkers, located at Aabybro Dairy Farm in North Jutland, have remained unused for 70 years. The year-round humidity averages 80%. In combination with the low temperature, the environment will offer this unique Skotlander Rum a taste profile that faithfully reflects the Danish terroir.

The Danish Food Administration approved Skotlander to install 10,000 liters of rum and the first small batches will be ready for sale in 2018.

Diplomatico adds Mantuano aged rum to Tradition Range

Mantuano Ron Extra Añejo rum’s name translates as “local nobleman” and is inspired by Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez, the 19th century character that inspirits the legend of Diplomático rums.

The Spirit of Diplomático

Mantuano Ron Extra Añejo rum

A rich dark medium-dry blend of aged rums from a traditional pot still, a unique batch kettle still and a modern column still, Mantuano is aged up to eight years and blended to perfection with great balance.

Don Juancho used his position of influence to benefit the development of his local region and to pursue his passion for travel and the discovery of new spirits, mainly rums. His significant impact on the rum industry and the appreciation of fine spirits in Venezuela is legendary.

This new expression in Diplomatico’s Tradition Range combines DUSA’s signature column, batch kettle and pot still distillates created from molasses and sugar cane honey.

Mantuano Tasting Notes

Aged up to eight years in white oak casks that previously held Bourbon and malt whiskey, Mantuano is precisely blended using 40% heavy pot still rum and 60% light and semi-heavy rums from the column and batch kettle stills for a fine balance.

Aromas of dried dark fruit, oak and a delicate spiciness are revealed. On the palate, a complex entry of dried fruits, wood and vanilla is well balanced, leading to a warm, semi-dry finish.

With a taste profile ideal for mixing in luxury cocktails, Mantuano’s rich body and delightful complexity will also appeal to those that prefer to drink it neat.

Mantuano is bottled at 40% abv and priced at $24.

American Rum Portfolio debuts at 2017 Miami Rum Festival

America is returning to its roots with a proliferation of local craft distillers creating authentic rums — as evidenced in the new American Rum Portfolio showcase at the 2017 Miami Rum Fest and Trade Expo. Is this the New American Rum Revolution?

Festival organizers recognize the rapid growth of American craft spirits. The 2017 Miami Rum Fest scheduled for April 22-23 at the DoubleTree Miami Airport Hotel and Convention Center will highlight a collection of fine American rums selected by the editors of Robs Rum Guide.

The 2017 Miami Rum Fest and Trade Expo April 22-23 will feature the American Rum Portfolio — highlighting a collection of award winning American rums selected by the editors of Robs Rum Guide.

The American Rum Portfolio Debuts

The American Rum Portfolio offers craft spirit producers an opportunity to present their best products at this large gathering of rum enthusiasts, experts and professionals.

Rum connoisseurs and collectors will discover the most complete collection of American rums ever assembled under one roof.

The New American Rum Revolution

Before the American revolution, more than 8,000 distilleries in the American colonies were producing rum from the plentiful supply of molasses available through trade with Caribbean islands. Most ceased production by the time prohibition decimated the American spirits industry. Now, that downward trend is reversing.

“In the past few years, more national, regional and local rum distillers are gaining well-deserved attention. Many are making their mark as true artisan spirits by winning awards and setting new standards for authentic, hand-made rum,” said Robert A. Burr, publisher of Robs Rum Guide.

“We’re now tracking more than 150 producers of American rum. It’s nothing short of a rum revolution — changing the American rum industry. They’re bringing back the art of craft distilling, presenting American rum in a most favorable light by emphasizing the quality aspects of small production.”

Miami Rum Fest and Trade Expo Celebrates Rum

Miami Rum Fest and Trade ExpoThe annual gathering of rum experts and consumers in Miami is the place where rum reputations are made. The RumXP panel of expert rum judges from around the world gathers for their blind tasting competition. Rum producers from far and wide — as well as locals — gather to present their products to an eager audience.

Rum distillers, importers, distributors and retailers come together once a year to collaborate and put their heads together to assess the direction of the rum industry.

Now, American rum producers will take a front row position as the American Rum Portfolio debuts at this global gathering.
